Reading the record

What the lines can—and cannot—say

The chart documents broad national prices, not any farm’s books. Cattle is the closest upstream measure; corn, soybeans, prepared feeds, and diesel are inputs whose importance varies by production system. Retail ground beef is a consumer benchmark, not a like-for-like substitute for a whole-animal farm purchase.

Changes are computed at build time from each series’ first observation in Jan 2020 and its latest observation. Weekly diesel therefore ends later than the monthly series.
